Family and Friends!
This week has been a bit of a struggle. Sister Ferre got a really
bad cold on Monday and she tried to just drink water and ignore it but it ended
up just getting worse and worse everyday. It turned into a nasty cough and when
we finally went to the doctor on Saturday we found out she had a sinus
infection. So we spent a lot of time this week inside while she tried to sleep
it off - didn't work until we went to the doctor - but on the up side, I had a
lot of time to study and read conference talks.
I ended up reading every talk Elder Holland has given in general
conference from last conference back to 2002. That is about 25 talks in three
days. My goal is to read all of them since he was called as an apostle. The
reason I chose to study his talks is that most of them focus on the Atonement
and that is something I wanted to study more. It was super cool. Plus, I got to
study Preach My Gospel and when Sister Ferre was somewhat conscious we watched
The District ("TV show" that follows a district of missionaries around)
which Sister Ferre's last companion called “Mormon Netflix.” As nice as it was
to have extra time to study, it was really, really hard to be away from the
people we taught for so long. We are super excited to get back to teaching
tonight!
| A rare sighting from this week: Sister Ferre not sleeping OR coughing! |
We have a new investigator that we got to teach at the beginning of
the week. He’s a high school student from Guatemala and has been living in
Phoenix for only two years. We found him by just knocking on his door when an
appointment fell through across the apartment complex. We brought a member with
us to his first official lesson and it turned out that they were from the same
city in Guatemala and knew some of the same people. They are pretty close in
age too so they were fast friend and it was just awesome. We didn't even know
where either of them was from before we had that lesson. Holla.
We also got to go to another lesson with one of our investigators
before Sister Ferre got sick and at the end of the lesson his 10 year old son
brings out huge plates of spaghetti for us. It was so preshy but we were
already late for another appointment so we told him that we would come back to
eat with him. Then when we came back, it turned out that his older brother had
eaten all of the food and the little boy started to cry. But we told him he
could pick a day and we would eat dinner with him and that made him super
happy. He is the bestttt.
I got to help a member make dinner this week - home made pizza. Very
American, with the Hispanic twist of making HUGE portions. We had seven
missionaries at dinner plus their three kids and we had so much pizza left
over. I will just let you imagine how much pizza that means we made. Every time
I would finish one she would put another thing of dough down and I was like...oh
wowzers. But it tasted great and was super fun so it was a success.
My Spanish is getting a lot better all of the sudden. Well, not a
lot better, but I have a lot more confidence so I talk more. It is really
helpful with the members because I feel like I can actually talk to them, which
they like too. Now I just think it is super fun to speak Spanish and I love
contacting people in Spanish!
Well those were really the only exciting things that happened this
week. We didn't get to teach a lot of lessons, and we didn't really go out a
lot. Tomorrow are our interviews with the mission president. We have them ever
other transfer (so about every twelve weeks) and they are only about 15 minutes
long, but they are the BEST. In my last interview President Sweeney just gave
me a lot of advice that was super helpful. You can tell how much he cares for
each individual missionary, which is so sweet. Love him!
Anyway I love you all, I hope that you all have a great week and a
great start to your year! Stay safe in the crazy weather!
LOVE YOU ALL!
Sister Doxey
